30 seconds, that’s all it took for the hopes of a first Bundesliga title in over a decade for Borussia Dortmund to come crashing down as Stuttgart managed to net in what could be the most decisive goal of the season in the dying stages of an end to end 3-3 draw on Saturday.
With Bayern being held by Hoffenheim to a 1-1 draw on the very same day, a win would have brought Dortmund level on points with the German giants, what followed instead was probably the most horrendous display of football in the 2nd half that Dortmund could have managed.
What went wrong?
Dortmund looked well on their way to breeze past Stuttgart struggling with relegation, being 2-0 up at halftime. A defensive implosion though soon followed and a 10-man Stuttgart team managed the unthinkable and brought the game to a level score of 2-2. What followed should have been the defining moment of Dortmund’s season, as super-sub Giovanni Reyna netted in the 3rd for them in the 92nd minute. The ecstasy didn’t last for long though.
A Marco Reus mistake, followed by sloppy defending from Soumaila Coulibaly allowed Silas Katompa to get a clear shot at goal and bury it past Gregor Kobel, putting a huge question mark on Dortmund’s credentials as title challengers this season. Terzic’s words of encouragement and what’s next
“There’s too much anger, too much disappointment. This is the place in which I normally want to defend my team, protect us as a group and maintain a positive energy. But I’m finding it very difficult, because it’s just so unnecessary, so stupid.” said Edin Terzic in the post-match conference, not shying away from how abysmal the team comes off looking post the draw.
With six games remaining and Bayern still looking to steady the ship under Tuchel, Dortmund will be looking for each and every chance they can get as they continue to still be a part of the most competitive title race in the Bundesliga in a long time.
