South Africa vs Bangladesh: Shakib Al Hasan to miss series against SA

Shakib Al Hasan will be rested in Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa as announced today by Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Chairman Jalal Yunus. Ace Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is all set to miss Bangladesh’s upcoming series against the Proteas. As he has been granted rest on mental and health grounds by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

BCB Grants rests to Shakib till April 30th

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, BCB’s cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus confirmed that the player requested the board to not include him in the squad for the South Africa tour. Jalal Quoted “He called me and said that I am not physically and mentally fit to play and want to skip the South Africa series and we have decided to give him rest till April 30,”. The Chairman added the Board has taken all aspects into consideration and has agreed to give him a break from the game. “He will not be involved in any form of cricket, international or domestic, until 30 April 2022. We hope he will return re energised and fully fit for the ensuing cricketing commitments.”

Is IPL disappointment too much to handle for Shakib?

Bangladesh will play a three-match ODI series, which is a part of the ICC World Cup Super League and two Tests against the Proteas in South Africa. In Feb a news surfaced where Shakib Al Hasan was to miss the two match Test series against South Africa in March-April 2022. Post the ODIs, Shakib was to leave South Africa to feature in the Indian Premier League (if picked by any team during the mega IPL auction). But was expected to feature in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in May. But things got changed drastically as Shakib couldn’t fetch a bidder in the IPL auctions. And maybe the future prospect of his career got on his nerves.

Moreover, Bangladesh will play three T20 matches against South Africa. The first of which will be played on March 18 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. The ODI series will be followed by a two-match Test series. Shakib’s absence could prove to be a bit risky for the Tigers. As the South African side have announced a star-studded squad that features the superstars like Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock and Lungi Ngidi and more.
