SL vs IRE: 2nd Test Day 5 – Sri Lanka Whitewash the Irish

Ramesh Mendis’ five-wicket haul helped Sri Lanka to win the last test match by an inning and 10 runs against Ireland at Galle. With their 100th test win, Sri Lanka sealed the two-match test series 2-0. Let’s see how the fifth day of the second SL vs IRE test match unfolded.

SL vs IRE Day 5 Report

After resuming on 2/54, the Irish batsmen piled up on 202 against Sri Lankan bowlers. Ireland lost their third wicket early in the form of Paul Stirling. Jayasuriya traps Stirling for a score of 61. Prabath Jayasuriya became the fastest spinner to reach 50 Test wickets only in seven test matches bettering Atif Valentine.

Ramesh Mendis (5/64) took the wickets of James McCollum (10), Ballbirnie (46), Campher (12), Andy McBrine (10) and Graham Hume (10). This was the fourth five-wicket haul for Mendis. Also, Asitha Fernando claimed three wickets.

For Ireland, the highest scorer was Harry Tector. He scored his career-best 85 before being removed by Fernando. This was his third half-century. Tector and Humphreys made the highest 41-run partnership for the 9th wicket. Captain Balbirnie scored 46, the second best after Tector. Earlier, he was retired hurt on 24 after a bouncer from Fernando hit his helmet.

Ireland has now lost all six matches since making its Test debut in 2018 against Pakistan in Dublin. Prabath Jayasuriya ( 5/174 & 2/88) became the player of the match. Kushal Mendis, who scored 385 runs in the series, became the player of the series.
