Domestic Career
In the year 2007, Hetmyer joined the Young Warriors Cricket Club and the coaches there helped him to nurture his batting skills for two years, which provided him with an opportunity of a spot in the Berbice U-15 Team in 2009. Although, he couldn’t give his best performance for the team, he still got selected for the Guyana U-15 Team, as the selectors saw him as a raw talent that needs to be garnished. When he turned 13, he smashed a stunning ton in during the U-19 inter-zone competition in Berbice county. With this century, he became the only player in the tournament to score a 100. Along with that, he is also named as the youngest player to represent a U-19 Team.
He became a part of the Guyana U-19 team in 2012 until 2014. There, during the ‘Regional U-19 Competition, 2012’, he smashed a strong century of 116 runs against Windwards U-19 in the 50-overs game.
International Career
Shimron Hetmyer made his international debut in the 50-over format when he was selected for the U-19 World Cup squad of 2014. Although, in the initial stages of the tournament, he couldn’t make the most out of this opportunity and got dismissed over a duck in three out of five matches at the U-19 World Cup.
Soon after that, he was given a chance to prove himself again when he got selected not only in the U-19 World Cup squad 2016 for West Indies but also got appointed as the skipper of the team. He grew out to be as a great skipper for the team as well as played with his amazing and consistent form in the tournament. Hetmyer led the squad to its victory and the U-19 West Indies team won the World Cup in 2016 under Hetmyer’s captaincy. He scored his first ODI century against United Arab Emirates during the Cricket World Cup Qualifier in 2018. Furthermore, his highest One-day international score is 139 against India. Hetmyer said in an interview that this was the best ton he has scored in his life until now.
His T20I journey started on 1st March 2018 against New Zealand. He had a nightmare batting display during the T20I series and couldn’t perform up to the mark. He proved to be a valuable player and contributed successfully against India where he scored 56 runs off 41 deliveries which included 2 boundaries and 4 huge sixes.
Unlike the international T20s, Shimron Hetmyer displayed a brilliant gameplay during the Caribbean Premiere League (CPL) in 2018 where he scored a total of 440 runs in just 12 innings. He scored a ton for the Guyana Amazon Warriors against the Jamaica Tallawahs. Following this, he became the youngest cricketer to score a century in CPL. However, in his international T20 career, he scored a total of 354 runs in 21 innings with a strike rate of 122.92.
IPL Career
Shimron Hetmyer came into the limelight through his ability to hit bravado sixes and smooth boundaries during West Indies’ limited-overs tours of India. Thereafter, he was presented in the auction of the Indian Premiere League for 2019. Hetmyer attracted the interest of the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise as they started to bid for the cricketer and got hold of him at Rs 4.20 Crore. However, Hetmyer couldn’t stand up to the people’s and his team’s expectations during the first 4 matches of the tournament. Finally, he got his form back during the end of the 2019 IPL and scored a wholesome 75 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad and led RCB to win the match.
