It is speculated that the 2024 season is the last IPL season for veteran MS Dhoni. You never know what is true, but if this speculation is correct, Chennai Super Kings will need a new captain. They did try the all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as a captain last season, but he stepped down mid-season. They do have many options to lead the franchise, but the one that stands out is Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Ruturaj Gaikwad as the next captain for Chennai Super Kings?
Ruturaj Gaikwad is 26 years old and is playing his 4th season for the Chennai-based franchise and has done well for them. The opener has scored 1396 runs at an average of 41.06 and a strike rate of 133 in 39 innings. He has scored 12 fifties and 1 hundred. Gaikwad was also the leading run-scorer for them in their title-winning season of 2021. Virender Sehwag feels that Ruturaj has all the qualities that MS Dhoni posses.
Ruturaj also has captaincy experience as he is leading Maharashtra in the domestic circuit. He led Maharashtra to the finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, where he won 8 out of 9 games. His only loss was at the hands of Saurashtra in the final.

Ruturaj seems to be a perfect candidate to lead CSK and is a long-term solution as he is young. He has also cemented his place in this successful franchise. It will be a golden opportunity for Gaikwad to nurture and grow under the great MS Dhoni.
It is hard to match the legacy of MS Dhoni and whoever gets the captaincy will be under pressure. But a successor needs to be named and Ruturaj Gaikwad is a favourite at the moment for that position. Chennai Super Kings have won four titles and are on a quest for their fifth this season.
