Top 5 bowlers who conceded most runs in an innings T20Is

It is often claimed that it’s the bowlers who win Test matches. However, with the game shortened down to 20 overs a side, the batters more often than not dominate the format. The batters play with a license to score runs freely. In such a case, many a times surviving a batter’s wrath as a bowler in this format can be a tough row to hoe. The in-form batters smash the bowlers all around the park for soaring boundaries. Due to the limited number of deliveries, a bowler doesn’t really get the rhythm right at times. And since there are only four stipulated overs, there isn’t much of a chance for a comeback. In this feature, we will tell you about the top 5 bowlers who conceded most runs in an innings T20Is.

5) Michael Dorgan

The match between Bulgaria and Serbia on June 24, 2021, didn’t come as a good memory for Serbia’s Michael Dorgan. Dorgan, who was making his Twenty20 debut with this match, was smashed all around the National Sports Academy, Sofia. The Sri Lankan origin Aravinda De Silva went all guns blazing and butchered a 60-ball 100 as Bulgaria posted 208 runs for 2 wickets in 20 overs. The left-arm orthodox spinner Dorgan conceded 66 runs in his 24-ball spell. However, he managed to get the wicket of Sulaiman Ali. In response, Serbia tried well and score 147 runs. But they fell well short of the target and Bulgaria won the match comprehensively by 61 runs.

4) Kyle Abbott

The 2nd T20I of West Indies tour of South Africa in 2015. Windies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bowl first. South Africa posted a mammoth total of 231 runs riding on a splendid ton by captain Faf du Plessis. If Windies were to win this match, they had to chase a world record. Only one man from the Caribbean team had the prowess to chase it down and it was the Universe Boss, Chris Gayle. And he, yet again, for the nth time, did what seemed an impossible undertaking. Propelled by Gayle’s 41-ball 90, the West Indies pulled off the highest successful run-chase in the shortest format of the game.

Kyle Abbott had a bland and forgettable outing in this game. He gave runs at an economy of 17 runs per over. His final analysis read 1/68 in 4 overs. Ranking it on fourth among the top 5 bowlers who conceded most runs in an innings T20Is.

3) Barry McCarthy

The match that saw the third of the top 5 bowlers who conceded most runs in an innings T20Is was played in India. However, the match didn’t involve the Indian Team. It was between Afghanistan, the hosts, and Ireland in Greater Noida. Two of Afghanistan’s most destructive batsmen, Mohammad Shahzad and Mohammad Nabi, set the bat rolling and thrashed scintillating fifties. This helped the hosts to set up 233 for 8, their highest T20 total. During their innings, the Afghan batters plundered 104 runs in their last 6 overs. They decidedly went after Barry McCarthy, who opened the bowling proceedings for the Irish team. Barry conceded 69 runs from his quota at an economy of 17.25 and went wicketless. The Irish team, in response, fought well but got all out for 205 runs in 19.2 overs.

2) Tunahan Turan

One of 2019’s most noteworthy days of cricket came in August. A small European nation, the Czech Republic, set four T20I world records within four hours to grab the world’s attention. The scene is from the Continental Cup. In a ground with no more than a dozen of spectators, the Czech batters wreaked havoc on the Turkish bowling. Coming in to bat at number 5, Sudesh Wickramasekara of the Czech Republic took all bowlers by storm and particularly Tunahan Turan. The young 21-years-old medium pacer, however, managed to get a wicket, but he leaked 70 runs in his four overs.

1) Kasun Rajitha

The first T20 of Sri Lanka’s tour of Australia in 2019 was played in Adelaide. Malinga won the toss and invited Australia to bat first. The pitch seemed to offer no assistance to the bowlers and Australia was in command of proceedings from the very start. Warner and Finch commenced the carnage and Maxwell capitalized on it. The batters were particularly brutal against pacer Kasun Rajitha who ended up conceding 75 runs off his four overs – the most expensive figures in a T20I ever. A century from David Warner followed by half-centuries from skipper Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell took the hosts to a mammoth 233 for two in 20 overs. In response, the Lankan team surrendered before the lethal Kangaroo bowling and managed only 99 from their stipulated 20 overs. David Warner’s maiden T20I ton handed Australia their biggest win and Sri Lanka their heaviest defeat in T20Is.
