Big Bash League 12: Scorchers come out top in yet another Sixer-Scorcher rivalry

The Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers are the top two teams of the Big Bash League having won four and three titles respectively.

Perth: Another Day, Another Sixer-Scorcher Match. Perth Scorchers defeated Sydney Sixers in the former’s first match of the season.

Scorchers elected to bat first after winning the toss at the Optus Stadium. Similar to the pattern in the recent Big Bash League matches, The Sixers proved too hot as a bowling attack by taking the top order in the powerplay. The efforts of Aaron Hardle who played a solid knock of 55 of 35 steered the ship in a controlled position thereby limiting the steady flow of wickets.

Aaron alongside Ashton Agar created a 70-run partnership that proved very useful in the Sixer-Scorcher clash. At the end of 20 overs, the Scorchers managed to put up a total of 155 for nine wickets. Amongst the Sixers’ bowling order, Jackson Bird fetched the most wickets. He scored three victims at an economy of 6.50. Izharulhaq Naveed strikes again with two wickets in his bag.

Chasing a respectable score, the Sixers lost momentum initially. The Scorchers burned their opponents by striking repeatedly thereby not creating any match-winning partnerships. The Sixers were down by 31/5 at 7.3 overs. The target although achievable was a distant dream.

Jordan Silk and Hayden Kerr built a solid foundation by scoring forties each. The structure beyond the sixth wicket couldn’t follow in the footsteps of the partnership. After the fall of the duo, Jhye Richardson swooped in and took out the tailenders pretty soon. With Naveen-ul-Haq departing on the last ball, Scorchers triumphed over the Sixers by 38 runs.

Jhye Richardson shone through the chase, taking four scalps in nine runs. Obviously, He has been adjudged the Man of the Match for his performance.

Sixers have now lost two of their matches this season while Scorchers start their campaign on a high note. The Sixer-Scorcher rivalry is compared to the Chennai-Mumbai rivalry of the Indian Premier League. With the win, Perth has now won 16 times against the Sixers while the Sixers have managed just 9.
