Launceston: Hobart Hurricanes defeated Perth Scorchers by eight runs at UTAS. The Hurricanes are off the mark in BBL12 thanks to a 4/16 by Patrick Dooley which restricted the four-time champions.
Hobart Hurricanes won the toss and decided to bat first. The match started on an entirely negative note for the Tasmanian team. Jason Behrendorff dismissed the opener on the first ball of the match. D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade formed a pretty decent partnership for the second wicket. Wade quickfire a half-century (51) off 29 balls. Tim David also shined for the Hurricanes with his explosive batting. He scored 46 runs off 28 balls including five boundaries. The Hurricanes finished off the innings with 172 runs on the board at eight wickets loss.
Amongst the Scorchers’ bowlers, Jhye Richardson picked up three while Tye and Hardle managed two. Jason Behrendorff did not take any wicket other than the Mcdermott one in the opening ball.
The Scorchers started off pretty decently in the chase. Francois du Plessis commenced an explosive wildfire with six boundaries. However, the successive wickets in the 24th and 25th balls disrupted the flow. Josh Inglis came out as two down and tried to maintain a good inning alongside captain Ashton Turner. They managed a 70+ run partnership before Turner departed in the 14th over. Patrick Dooley nailed down Josh Inglis in the 16th over bringing back the momentum to the Hurricanes.
Dooley completely dismantled the Scorchers by sending Agar in the same over while managing only two runs. The tailenders could not pull off the nail-biting finish Scorchers required. They managed 25 runs in the last four overs with the loss of two overs. At the end of the 20 overs, The Scorchers were at 164/8 falling eight runs short of a victory.
Hurricanes with the win moved to the fifth position while Scorchers dropped down to the fourth. Both teams have managed a win from two matches. Hurricanes will meet wooden spooners Sydney Sixers on Thursday. On the other hand, Perth has a home game against the Stars on Saturday.
