Jason Jonathan Roy was born on 21st July, 1990 in Durban, South Africa. Although, being born in a country of ‘Graveyard of Ships’, he still hails from Reigate, Surrey, England. When Roy was 10 years old, his family moved back with him to England. He initially started to play cricket at the age of 9, although it wasn’t something he looked at to be his future career. Domestic Career

Jason Roy started off his domestic career by making his debut on 27th June, 2008 for the Surrey first team in a T-20 Cup match which was against Middlesex Cricket Team. He played his first List A match just a day before his 18th birthday i.e., on 20th July in NatWest Pro40 League fixture against Yorkshire.

Although, he was dropped after the match and was not given a proper opportunity to play until it was 2010 when he got re-selected in the first team again. In a match against Kent in Beckenham, he proved his worth and showed his skills to everyone who might have thought it better to drop the player. Roy smashed a knock of 101 off 51 deliveries, making it Surrey’s first T20 hundred. When the time for the NatWest T20 Blast came in 2014, Jason scored a total of 677 runs in the whole tournament and made it the highest tally of the competition.

International Career

Jason Roy made his ODI debut on 8th May, 2015 against Ireland. He scored pretty fine in that game and then he was opted for the five-match series against New Zealand, in June 2015 itself. The tournament didn’t turn out to be very great for the cricketer but the English cricketing board sure saw his talent during his batting display throughout the series. In 2016, when he was selected for an ODI series against Sri Lanka, Roy put up an opening partnership with Alex Hales of a colossal 256 runs. This was the highest run chase without losing any wicket in the history of cricket. Jason Roy scored a knock of 112 runs from just 95 deliveries in this match. 

His T20I career started against India for a one-off T20I match in September 2014. Although, he didn’t perform up to the mark, despite England winning that match by 3 runs. After this one T20, he was included in the squad for the 2016 T20 World Cup. In the beginning phases of the game, Jason was struggling to keep his form consistent and wasn’t able to score much beneficial runs for the team. However, during the last stages of the tournament, to mention, in the semi-finale of this world cup, his quick knock of 78 runs against New Zealand helped England to jump up to the finals.  

Roy started off his Test career against Ireland during the Ashes 2019. Although, his test performance has often been questioned, still he was in the squad for the four Ashes Test matches. Jason Roy stepped foot into the Indian Premiere League in the year 2017 and represented for the Gujarat Lions franchise. In 2018, he was acquired by the Delhi Capitals (then ‘Daredevils’) franchise for a total amount of Rs 1.5 Crore but then he was released by them for the year 2019. He wasn’t able to play half of the tournament for Delhi Capitals owing to the World Cup preparations and therefore decided to opt out of the remaining competition.
