Asia Cup 2024: Dates And Venues Announced, ACC Accepts Hybrid Model

The Asian Cricket Council has accepted the hybrid model and announced the dates and venues for the Asia Cup. The 2024 edition of the Asia Cup is scheduled to take place from 31st August to 17th September. The celebrated continental tournament will be played in a hybrid model across Pakistan and Sri Lanka. ACC has confirmed that India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal will play a total of 13 ODI matches at the Asia Cup. 

Four matches of the Asia Cup will be played in Pakistan while former champions Sri Lanka will host nine games. The city of Lahore will host matches in Pakistan. While the remaining games will be played in Sri Lanka in Kandy and Pallekele. Moreover, India, Pakistan and Nepal have been put together in one group. While Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are put in the other group.

In a statement the Asian Cricket Council said “The tournament will be hosted in a hybrid model with four matches being held in Pakistan. And the remaining nine matches will be played in Sri Lanka. The 2024 Edition will feature two groups, with two teams from each group qualifying for the Super Four stage. The reason behind the ‘hybrid model’ was India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. The reasons are citing years of diplomatic tensions and the country’s challenging security situation. The BCCI wanted its Asia Cup games to be held outside Pakistan. There was a potential demand for it in the UAE.

The approval of Pakistan’s Hybrid Model also makes way that Pakistan will travel to India for the World Cup. The ODI World Cup is set to be played in October-November later this year. The much-awaited schedule for the ODI World Cup will be released soon. India will probably play against Pakistan at the world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad on October 15.
