Analysing Deepak Chahar comeback after hamstring injury; Performance in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe

For it being the only his 8th ODI, Chahar won his 2nd match award in this format for his bowling figures of 7-0-27-3

Deepak Chahar made his comeback after recovering from a hamstring injury and a rest of almost six months. Chahar had suffered the quadriceps injury during the 3rd T20 series against West Indies in February this year. Things got even worse for Chahar when he picked up a back injury during his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Chahar’s comeback after injury makes an important call on his selection for T20 World Cup.

Chahar wanted to make his return earlier. As he made a statement to News24, “If I wanted, I could have made a comeback 2-3 weeks ago only. I could have played the T20 series against West Indies. But then, my thought process was that whenever you play, you give your 110 percent. Don’t even play at 99 percent. I believe I should be able to perform better than the time before I got injured”.

Chahar’s comeback

His performance in the 1st ODI against Zimbabwe, in the ongoing tour, truly gives evidence of his comeback. After opting to bowl first India beat Zimbabwe by 10 wickets. The overall performance of the Indian team was impeccable including numerous good performances.

Deepak Chahar’s performance was remarkable as he made early inroads into the Zimbabwean batting lineup dismissing 3 wickets, namely, Innocent Kaia, Tadiwanashe Marumani, and Wessly Madhevere.

Jittery start, strong finish

For it being the only his 8th ODI, Chahar won his 2nd match award in this format for his bowling figures of 7-0-27-3. Certainly, being a little jittery in the first couple of overs, Chahar managed to finally gain his confidence and rhythm during the rest of the 7-over spell.

When you play an international game after six and half months, obviously you will be a little nervous. Before coming here I played at least 4-5 practice games and the body and mind wasn’t working together in the first few overs but it got better after that. I’m fine and the body is fine as well,” said Chahar while receiving his Player of the Match trophy.

Expert opinion on Chahar’s form

Chahar’s comeback after injury was impressive. However, the experts commented that Chahar needs to work more on his action. Especially, talking about the front foot while delivering the ball. We hope that he stays fit and returns to his best form ahead of the T20 World Cup, which takes place later this year. As he looks to be one of the prominent options for the Indian Squad.
