Sheuli Biography
Achinta Sheuli won the men’s 73 kg competition and set a new Commonwealth Games record in the process. On his third try, he performed a clean and jerk lift of 170 kg, adding it to his 143 kg snatch lift for a total lift of 313 kg.
In the snatch section, Sheuli, a junior world championship silver medalist, performed three clean lifts of 137 kg, 140 kg, and 143 kg.

He broke the Games record and increased his own best with his 143 kg attempt.
The Kolkata lifter started with a 166kg lift, which he easily lifted, going into clean and jerk with a five kilogramme advantage.

Sheuli then struggled with his 170kg attempt before succeeding on his third try and setting a new Games record with a total lift (313kg). The Malaysian lifter tried a 176kg lift in his final two attempts
Achinta, a 20-year-old former tailor from the West Bengali area of Howrah, began weightlifting in 2011 after idolising his brother, who had also competed in the sport. Later, in 2015, he joined Army Sports Institute and kept up his outstanding performance in the sport. He joined the Indian National Camp in the same year, 2015 He trained at ASI once again in 2016 and 2017, and since 2018, he has been in the National camp.

Achinta’s mother Purnima Sheuli always encouraged him to pursue his passion for weightlifting and represent the nation on the international stage despite the fact that he lost his father when he was a very small boy.

While receiving medals for the nation is an honour for Achinta, his family’s financial stability has been made possible by his sport, which is arguably even more significant. He says, “The biggest happiness for me is that I have been able to contribute to the security of my family. With the money I’m making, I have been able to let my mother finally leave her job doing embroidery. I did embroidery myself when I had to help my family. But it feels very good that I can help them through my weightlifting now,”.
