Deepak Punia bio

An Indian wrestler named Deepak Punia was born on May 19, 1999, in Chhara, Jhajjar, Haryana. His paternal grandpa and father, Subhash Punia, were professional wrestlers who participated in a number of regional contests.

He had grown up watching the neighbourhood mud wrestling matches. Later, in order to support his father financially, he competed in local wrestling. Virendra Singh noticed Deepak’s talent for wrestling at this time and encouraged him to join the Chhatrasal Arena to advance in his career.

He relocated to Delhi in 2015 and registered at Chhatrasal Arena. He subsequently began working out with the academy’s trainers (Virender Kumar and Satpal Singh). Later, Deepak participated in state, junior, and senior national events and took home gold in each.

He won his first international title in 2016 as he took home the Gold in the men’s freestyle 86 kg division of the World Cadet Championship in Tbilisi, Georgia. He won the gold medal at the Asian Junior Championship 2018 in New Delhi two years later.

At the 2019 World Junior Wrestling Championships, he won a gold medal. Punia also won silver at the 2019 World Championships and bronze at the 2019 Asian Championships.

Deepak earned the bronze medal in the 86kg division at the 2020 Asian Championships the following year. He earned the Silver medal at the Almaty-hosted 2021 Asian Champions a year later.

He made his summer games debut in 2021 at the Tokyo Olympics in the men’s 86 kg division and took home a bronze medal after losing to M.N. Amine (San Marino).
