Where Sunil Chhetri was Born?

Sunil Chettri was born in Secunderabad in the state of Telangana (then in Andhra Pradesh) on August 3, 1984, to father KB Chhetri and mother Sushila Chhetri. His father played football for the Indian Army’s team, while his mother played for Nepal women’s national team. As his father was an army man, which means regular transfers, Sunil traveled across the country.

He loved playing football as a kid but never thought of pursuing it professionally. His main motive to keep on excelling in the sport was to get enrolled in a good college for his education.

However, 16-year-old Sunil earned his call to the Asian School Championships in Kuala Lumpur in 2001. At that time he also got admitted to a college in New Delhi.

The young Sunil was spotted by one of India’s oldest football clubs- Mohun Bagan. He signed a contract in 2002 to play for the upcoming domestic season, and that was just the beginning.

After three years with Mohun Bagan, he moved to JCT. He became the third player from the subcontinent to get a contract from a foreign club as Kansas City Wizards signed him in 2010 for Major League Soccer. Portuguese club Sporting Clube de Portugal also signed him, but he played for its reserve side.

Sunil has won the AIFF Player of the Year five times (in 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2017). He was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2011. In 2009 and 2018, he won the FPAI Indian Player of the Year award.

He made his international debut against Pakistan on June 12, 2004, and so far, scored 84 goals in 131 international matches.
