Initial Observations
Mason Greenwood has been added to Manchester United’s retained list for the 2024–24 season, the club said on Friday. However, sources have indicated that United has not yet made a decision about the footballer’s future.
Since being accused of attempted rape, assault, and engaging in coercive or controlling conduct in January 2022, the 21-year-old has been barred from participating in games and training sessions. The accusations against him were later dismissed in February 2024. United started its own inquiry right away, and it is still ongoing.
The fact that Greenwood is listed on the club’s retained list, which has been forwarded to the Premier League, shows his status as a player under contract and is not seen as a sign of his future at United. He is under contract at Old Trafford through 2025, with a one-year extension option.
Situation of De Gea at United
Goalkeeper David De Gea and United are still in discussions about extending his contract. The club wants the goalie to stay, even though he will legally become a free agent on June 30 when his contract ends. The goalkeeper was manager Erik Ten Hag’s No. 1 last season.
United is aiming to reach an agreement on an extension that would dramatically lower the 32-year-old’s base pay but include built-in bonuses based on the number of games he plays. De Gea stays, Ten Hag wants to bring in a new custodian this summer to give the Spaniard greater competition for his starting position. Tom Heaton to remain at United.
Tom Heaton will remain at United after the team exercised a one-year option in his contract, but Jack Butland, who joined on loan from Crystal Palace in January, has signed for Rangers. After their contracts expired, a number of players were let go, including Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe.
