Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from ODI Cricket. The final match of the ongoing series against New Zealand in Cairns, on Sunday. However, he will continue to captain the Australian side in T20Is, ahead of the World Cup next month. On that note, this article is to celebrate Aaron Finch and His ODI Journey.

Aaron Finch ODI Career

Aaron James Finch is an aggressive top-order batter, known for his hard-hitting ability to finish matches. Finch made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at the MCG in 2013 and scored his first century against Scotland later that year when he struck 148. His career-best unbeaten 153 came against Pakistan in Sharjah in March 2019 at a time when he has emerged from a rough patch. During this period numerous questions were raised ahead of that year’s ODI World Cup. However, he scored four ODI hundreds in 2019 while amassing 1141 runs.

But currently, Aaron Finch has been enduring an awful run of form in 50-over cricket, making just 169 at 13, with five of his last 12 innings being ducks including one a couple of days ago in Cairns. In his last seven innings, he has made 26 runs.

ODI Career Stats

In a 9-year-long career, Finch has played 145 matches. In 141 innings he has an aggregate of 5401 runs, with an average of 39.14 and a strike rate of 87.82. Throughout his career, he has scored 17 centuries and 30 half-centuries.

As an ODI captain

In January 2017, Finch was named as stand-in captain for the first ODI against New Zealand in Australia‘s tour of New Zealand after Matthew Wade was withdrawn from the side with an injury. Finch continued to remain the captain for the rest of the matches.
The 35-year-old has captained the Australian team on 54 occasions. Out of 54 matches, he led his team to 30 victories. As an ODI captain, his win percentage is 55.55.

In April 2019, he was named the captain of Australia’s squad for the 2019 ICC World Cup. During this tournament, Finch produced a hard-fought fifty in the semi-final against India. His partnership with Steve Smith was crucial to Australia’s chances in the game. With the added responsibility of leadership this time around, the onus is on Finch to lead from the front.

What’s Ahead for Aaron Finch

For a long time, Finch had set his sights on making the 2024 ODI World Cup in India his swansong, but said on Sunday he had started to think about his retirement before the Zimbabwe series and had realized next year’s tournament was out of reach. Though his recent knee problem is not causing major issues, he does have troublesome shoulder.

He will now attempt to defend the T20 title oh home soil in what could be the final stage of his international career, after Australia claimed the trophy for the first time last year.
