Nomi, Japan: India’s 20km Race-Walkers Paramjeet Singh and Vikash Singh qualified for the Paris 2024 and the 2024 World Athletics championships.
Vikash Singh clocked 1:20:05s while Paramjeet finished at 1:20:08s. The pair came behind China’s Qian Haifeng, who took 1:19:09s. The cut-off for the Olympics and the World Championships in Budapest was 1:20:10s.
India’s Akshdeep Singh clinched the gold medal while Priyanka Goswami bagged bronze in the men’s and women’s category respectively at the Asian 20km Race Walking Championships 2024 held in Nomi, Japan on Sunday. Akshdeep Singh is the second Indian to win gold in the championship after Gurmeet Singh in 2016.
Priyanka Goswami, who qualified earlier by winning the National Championship, clocked 1:32:27. Lan Gao of China won the gold medal with a timing of 1:29:25. Ayane Yanai of Japan clocked 1:0:58 to finish second ahead of the Indian athlete. Munita Prajapati and Bhawna Jat missed the Olympics and World Championships qualifying mark of 1:29:20 by a big margin, clocking 1:33:22 and 1:36:20 respectively in the open category.
Vikash, Paramjeet’s achievement takes the total tally of Indians at Paris 2024 to seven. Of the seven, four are in the Race-Walking category. Bhowneesh Mendiratta, Rudrankksh Patel, and Swapnil Kusale are the three shooters who have qualified as of now in addition to the track athletes.
The 15th edition of the race is an annual race walking competition for athletes representing countries from Asia. The event was held after three years during which it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
