“Well deserved trophy!”- Twitter erupts after 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna becomes oldest Indian Wells champion

It was their second title together and their first one this season.

India’s Rohan Bopanna became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion when he and Australian doubles partner Matt Ebden put a cherry on top of a dream run by defeating top-seeded Netherlands’ Wesley Koolhof and Britan’s Neil Skupski 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 in the final of the Indian Wells on Saturday. It was their second title together and their first one this season.

Truly special. It’s called Tennis Paradise for a reason,” said Bopanna who turned 43 on March 4. He surpassed Canada’s Daniel Nestor who clinched the 2015 Cincinnati Masters to become the oldest champion at the age of 42. I’ve been, over the years, coming here and seeing all these guys win for so many years. I’m really happy that Matt and I were able to do this and get this title here.

It’s been some tough matches, close matches. Today we play against one of the best teams out there. Really happy that we got the trophy,” added Bopanna who was also playing his 10th ATP Masters 1000 final and clinched his 24th tour-level trophy. Bopanna is also the first Indian man to lift the BNP Paribas Open doubles title since legend Leander Paes in 2007. Matt Ebden who won last year’s Wimbledon title with compatriot Max Purcell claimed his ninth tour-level title and his first at the ATP Masters 1000.

The unseeded Bopanna and Ebden overwhelmed defending champions John Isner and Jack Sock in the semi-finals, while in the quarter-finals, they outclassed Canadians Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov. Earlier, the Indian-Australian duo faced Rafael Matos and David Vega Hernandez in their opening match.

The former World No.3 Bopanna, whose family owns a coffee plantation in Coorg said the drink was his secret to success. “It’s the Indian coffee that I keep having when traveling. That’s the secret.” He added that the biggest thing he makes sure of is to recover well after matches.
