Just In: Wimbledon set to ban Russian and Belarusian tennis players amid Ukraine Invasion

Wimbledon will be held between 27th, June to 10th, July

Due to the ongoing Ukraine Invasion, All England Lawn Tennis Club Wimbledon set to ban Russian and Belarusian tennis players from the Grand Slam. Two of the top 10 men and three of the top 20 women players will be ruled out of Wimbledon. This leads, the world no. 2 Daniil Medvedev and world no. 8 Andrey Rublev to get affected this year. The women’s competition too will be massively affected. Three among the top 20 – Aryna Sabalenka (4), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (15), and Victoria Azarenka (18) are expelled from the tournament.

Wimbledon set to ban Russian and Belarusian tennis players

Ian Hewitt, chairman of the AELTC expressed his sorrow for the individuals affected due to this hard decision against the action of the Russian regime.

The Russians and Belarusians unfortunately will not be able to compete this year. Wimbledon 2022, is scheduled from June 27th to July 10th at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London. But they will be still able to compete in the French Open 2022.

Although, the ATP, WTA and ITF have so far allowed all Russians and Belarusians under a neutral flag to compete in every tournament. But, Wimbledon set to ban Russian and Belarusian tennis players and does not permit these players this year.

Many players are disappointed by the decision of AELTC on banning the Russians and Belarusians. However, retired woman world no. 1 Ashleigh Barty would not be back on the court from this year. The Ladies’ doubles runner-up duo from Russia, Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina, will also not compete this Wimbledon.
