Rafael Nadal becomes the first man to win 400 ATP-1000 matches

On Monday, Rafael Nadal won his 400th ATP Masters 1000 match, defeating Dan Evans at the BNP Paribas Open to widen his lead over the field. Since the Masters 1000 series began in 1990, the 21-time Grand Slam winner has been the first player to win 400 matches. With his third-round victory at Indian Wells, he is currently 19 victories ahead of his great adversary Roger Federer. Novak Djokovic is seven triumphs behind him whilst Andy Murray is at the fourth position with 219 victories.

His first win came against Karol Kucera in the Principality. Afterwards, he went on to win two more matches until falling in the final 16 against Guillermo Coria. From then till 2013, he went undefeated in the event. However, Monte Carlo is understandably at the top of the list in terms of Masters events where he won the majority of his 400 matches, as he is an 11-time winner in the Principality with 73 victories. Also, the Spaniard has won the Italian Open ten times, putting him in third place in terms of most victories, while Indian Wells is in third place.

In Shanghai in 2015, he defeated Stan Wawrinka for win No. 300, and seven years later, he has added another 100 triumphs to his record.

Nevertheless, when he takes on 17th seed Reilly Opelka on Wednesday, Nadal, who has 36 Masters championships, will be looking to achieve his win No. 401.
