2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic will square off against World No. 23 Dan Evans in the third round of the 2022 US Open on Saturday.
Cilic advanced to the second round by defeating qualifier Maximilian Marterer in the first round. The Croat got the match going quickly, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first set and going on to win it. Throughout the opening half of the third set, both players maintained a strong serve. In the ninth game, he broke his opponent’s service to win the set after blowing five break points in the seventh game to further increase his lead. With a comeback, the Australian won the third set. However, Duckworth’s forward progress abruptly came to an end. Evans made a comeback to make the score 3-3. The World No. 23 moved when the Australian was serving to stay in the game at 5-4. He defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 by breaking his opponent’s serve one final time.
