Defending champion John Isner will square off against sixth seed Jenson Brooksby in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Atlanta Open on Friday.
Isner faced rising teenager Ben Shelton as he began his championship defence. As the reigning champion served to remain in the set at 6-5, the youngster had one break point, which was also a set point. In order to force a tie-break, Isner was able to hold off the challenge. Finally, on his fourth chance, he was able to seal the set. Neither player faced a break point in the third set after the youngster won the second set, as they both maintained serve with ease. Isner prevailed in the subsequent tie-break to win the game 7-6(8), 4-6, 7-6. (3).
Jenson Brooksby faced fellow countryman Mackenzie McDonald in the second round after a straightforward victory over Benoit Paire in the first round. In the eighth game, Brooksby gained the crucial break to move ahead 5-3. He then served out the rest of the set with relative ease. In the second set, he continued to apply pressure and gained a break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. In the very next game, McDonald had two break point opportunities to return to serving, but he was unable to capitalise on each of them. This effectively gave Brooksby the victory, as he quickly served it out for the 6-3, 6-4 victory.
