The Australian player Glenn McGrath, with 71 wickets, leads the list of most wickets in World Cup history. The pacer was a part of the Australian team in four different World Cups (1996, 1999, 2003, and 2007) and played a major role in the team lifting the trophy three times.

Collectively, in all four World Cups, he played a total of 39 matches and picked up 71 wickets with an outstanding economy of 3.96. McGrath picked up five wickets two times in the World Cup, and his bowling figure of 7/15 is still the best bowling figure by a player in the World Cup.

2. Muttiah Muralidaran: 69 wickets

With 69 wickets, Muttiah Muralidaran finds himself second on the list. The Sri Lankan legendary spinner has picked 69 wickets collectively in five different World Cups.

He was a part of the Sri Lankan side in the 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2011 ODI World Cups. He played in a total of 40 matches and picked up 69 wickets with an economy of 3.88, which is the best by a player in World Cup history.

3. Lasith Malinga: 56 wickets

Another Sri Lankan legend finds his place on the list in third place. The fast bowler, Lasith Malinga, has picked up 56 wickets in just 29 matches.

He played in four different World Cups, i.e., 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019. Malinga has picked up four wickets two times, and his best bowling figure in an ODI World Cup is 6/38. He had a bowling strike rate of 24.89, which is the best by a Sri Lankan bowler in the World Cup.

4. Wasim Akram: 55 wickets

In fourth place, we have the Rawalpindi Express, Wasim Akram, with 55 wickets on the list. The Pakistani fast bowler has picked up 55 wickets in 38 matches, which is the most by any Pakistani cricketer on the list.

He played in four different World Cups (1987, 1992, 1996, and 1999) and played a major role in Pakistan lifting the 1992 ODI World Cup. He won the Man of the Match award in the final and was also the leading wicket-taker of the tournament.

5. Mitchell Starc: 50 wickets

When we talk about leading wicket-takers in the ODI World Cup, how can we forget Mitchell Starc? With 50 wickets in ODI World Cups, Mitchell Starc is the new entrant on the list and ranks in the fifth position.

The player has played in three ODI World Cups, including the 2024 ODI World Cup. Collectively, in all three World Cups, he has played a total of 19 matches and picked up 50 wickets. Yes, only 19 matches. He has been the leading wicket-taker in both the World Cups (2015 and 2019) in which he has played and has had a great start in the current World Cup.
