He achieved so much success in his career because of the workload and dedication he put in, making him one of the most influential and inspiring athletes in the world. However, an investigation found that he used performance-enhancing drugs over his career, leading to him being stripped of his titles

2    Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona is one of the most renowned footballers in the history of sports. He is one of the greatest footballers alongside the Brazilian legend Pele. He was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award. His goal-scoring ability and dribbling made him different and unique from the other players. Diego’s name revolved around controversies throughout his playing career as he lived a troubled off-field life and was banned in both 1991 and 1994 for abusing drugs. His addiction to drugs and alcohol led to several health issues.

Maradona put on a lot of weight and at one stage he weighed close to 128 kg. He suffered a heart attack in 2004. His behavior towards the fans was not very good as he used to get into many altercations with them for small reasons. The biggest controversy of Maradona’s career was when he scored the most controversial goal in the history of the World Cup. He punched an aerial ball, with his hand, past the goalkeeper Peter Shilton. This act came to be known as the ‘Hand of God’ which led to Argentina beating England in 1986 to win the FIFA World Cup.

Kobe Bryant is arguably one of the most well-known NBA players of all time. People know him for a variety of reasons, a few of them being his extreme dedication to the game and his natural talent With all the eyes and attention on him, it’s easy to see how he became one of the most controversial players in the NBA. In 2003, a sexual assault case against him made major headlines. Even though they eventually dropped the case, no one ever forgot about it. He even had a famous feud with fellow player Shaquille O’Neal. The feud made headlines on many occasions during that era.

4    Mike Tyson

Mike Tyson is the name that comes to your mind when you hear the word boxing. He is one of the most dangerous and renowned boxers of all time. People say that after the greatest boxer of all time Muhammad Ali it was Mike Tyson who terrified his opponents just by his presence alone. Mike is famous for hitting brutal knockouts that would leave his opponents lying on the floor for quite some time. In a total of 58 matches, he won 50, and 44 out of the 50 he won were by knockouts. With so much success it’s obvious that controversies were about to enter his life in no time. In 1992, they convicted Tyson of rape and sentenced him to six years in prison, although he was released on parole after three years. Tyson lost the WBA title to Evander Holyfield by an eleventh-round stoppage.

Their 1997 rematch ended when Tyson was disqualified for biting Holyfield’s ears, one bite notoriously being strong enough to remove a portion of his right ear.

5    O.J Simpson

O.J. Simpson is a retired American college track athlete and professional football player. He was the first professional football player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, a mark he set in 1973. Almost every person in the world has heard of Simpson but the reason is not to be proud of them. it is not because of his Heisman Trophy, or his legendary Hall of Fame career in the NFL as a running back for the Buffalo Bills. They convicted Simpson for the brutal murder of his former wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994.
After investigation, they found Simpson not guilty of the two murders and allowed him to go free, but the controversy multiplied when he released a book about how he would have committed the crimes if he had been the murderer.
