In a commanding performance at the IIHF WJC 2024, Team USA secured their sixth gold medal by defeating hosts Sweden 6-2 in Gothenburg.

Isaac Howard of Tampa Bay Lightning showcased a stellar performance with two goals in the second period. The third period saw Team USA sealing the win with three additional goals, including an empty-netter from captain Rutger McGroarty. McGroarty is a major prospectus of NHL league leaders Winnipeg Jets.

The game witnessed a back-and-forth scoring affair through the first two periods, with Howard’s offensive prowess putting the Americans in the lead. Despite a goal by Otto Stenberg for Sweden, Team USA’s relentless attack proved decisive.

Zeev Buium, Ryan Leonard, and Rutger McGroarty extended the lead in the third period, solidifying the 6-2 victory.

Throughout the tournament, Team USA displayed dominance, remaining undefeated. Notably, they overcame challenges in the quarterfinals and semifinals against Latvia and Finland, respectively.

Isaac Howard and Jonathan Lekkerimaki emerged as top goal-scorers with seven goals each. The WJC 2024 Most Valuable Player title was conferred to Lekkerimaki. Cutter Gauthier received recognition as the best forward of the tournament. For the 2004-born players on Team USA, the gold medal marked a redemptive moment after falling short in previous tournaments.

In the bronze-medal game, Czechia secured an impressive 8-4 win against Finland. The 2024 Runners-Up also received praise earlier after they knocked out defending champions and tournament favorites Canada.
