In a David and Goliath contest between reigning European champions Real Madrid and history seeking Osasuna, Real Madrid came out victorious to win the Copa del Rey title for the 20th time in their history.
It was a euphoric night for the Brazillian samba boys Vinicius and Rodrygo who combinedly won the domestic cup for the Los Blancos first time since 2014, in the due course they have won four Champions League trophy and captured the league thrice, yet the Copa del Rey title remained as the only nemesis in the duration.
Things have changed on Sunday as a Rodrygo brace helped Real Madrid beat Osasuna(2- 1)who were looking for their first major trophy in their entire club history at the Estadio La Cartuja, Seville. Vinicius who was brilliant on the left ran through the Osasuna defence to set up Rodrygo to open the scoring after just two minutes into the game. Not many teams would stand toe to toe with Real Madrid in any final, but the Pamplona side manned up for the clash. In the 58th minute, of all people Lucas Torro a Real Madrid academy graduate scored from edge of the box to level the score but 12 minutes later Rodrygo sealed the victory for Real Madrid after Toni Kross’ shot was deflected by a Osasuna defender. Carlo Ancelotti’s men will now quickly have to shift their focus to Champions League Semi Finals as they host Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the midweek.
“We had been talking all week about how it had been a long time since Real Madrid had won this title, I really wanted to win this title it was the only (club) title I was missing.” Said Rodrygo the POTM.
