After seeing his potential with the ball, his coach scolded him for being very light regarding the game and told him to focus. Since then, Umran practiced maturely in the nets and would bowl deliveries with over 145+ speed. 

In the year 2018, the selectors committee of India’s U-19 team went to visit Vaishno Devi Mandir. While strolling, Umran caught their attention and they saw him bowling in the nets with an efficient and great speed. The selectors were stunned by the raw talent and asked the Jammu and Kashmir U-19 team to give him a chance to play. However, after few months, he was selected in the state’s U-19 squad but was omitted in every game that the team played. Nevertheless, he did not lose the plot after the huge disappointment and continued to struggle his way into some opportunistic leagues that would help his cricketing career grow.

Umran Malik played his first match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at the 2020-2021 series. Following which he was selected in the T20 squad of the state team of Jammu and Kashmir.
