“Thought That Flight Would Never Land”: Ravichandran Ashwin narrates the frightening story from Australia Tour

Team India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recalled a nightmarish flight experience from Melbourne to Sydney during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21.

Who can forget the infamous Border Gavaskar Trophy of 2020-21 and the comeback which India made after the side registered its lowest-ever score in the Test series opener after being bundled out for just 36. Adding more to misery was the injuries which broke the spine of the visitors.

India scripted history by chasing down a target of 328 at the Gabba in the final test of the four-match Test series. A seven-wicket victory which was achieved with just 17 balls to spare, saw India retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a second straight series win in Australia.

That Scary Flight

Ashwin, who was one of the chief architects behind India’s heroics, has recalled his ‘scary’ flight experience when the Indian camp flew from Melbourne to Sydney.

“We were flying to Sydney and the flight encountered a thunderstorm. It was so scary that for a moment, I thought that the flight would never land,”

Ashwin hit 39* off 128 balls at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) with Vihari, who notched up unbeaten 161-ball 23 as the two put up a vigilant stand to dash Australia’s hopes of a win.

“We both got comfortable the instant we went in. We realised what problem we had, he could not come forward and be going on the backfoot. He was struggling from the hamstring injury. When I went to the crease I could not go forward against the fast bowlers. So in that situation, I said we will rotate and see how this will work,”

SAID ASHWIN

The seasoned allrounder grabbed 12 wickets to end up as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the series despite missing the fourth and final Test with a back injury. Ashwin also shared how he played the third Test with painkillers.

“It was surprising to me that I went bowling after the injury with painkillers. And bowled 13 or 14 over on the trot. It was so bad i was rolling on the floor because of the pain. My wife and kids helped me to stand and then the Physio came to check me. I went to the game crawling, but did my best.”
