India recorded their highest successful run chase of 312 runs in the second ODI against West Indies at Queens Park Oval stadium in Port of Spain on July 24. It was a close call for the visitors with half-centuries from Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Akshar Patel saving the day. Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran‘s astonishing innings helped West Indies put up a mammoth total of 311. Initially the Indians struggled in the IInd innings. It was Akshar Patel’s heroics at the end which helped Men in blue clinch the match. With 64* with 5 sixes and 3 fours that saved India.
However, controversy ensued earlier in the Indian innings as well settled Shreyas Iyer was given LBW out on the delivery from Alzarri Joseph. The West Indies bowler bowled a yorker. The delivery on the leg-stump which Iyer tried to whip on the leg-side, but the ball hit his pads. Shreyas Iyer smashed 63 runs off 71 balls before he got out on the debatable LBW decision.
Clearly an example of poor use of technology
“I was really happy with the score which I got today but really unhappy with the way I was dismissed. I thought I could have taken the team through easily but very unfortunate with the wicket. Hopefully, I score a century in the next game,”
SAID SHREYAS IN A POST-MATCH PRESS CONFERENCE.
The on-field umpire gave Iyer out, but he opted for a review. The review showed that the ball had pitched on the leg-stump, but the ball tracking showed that the ball would have missed the stumps.
The whole incident left a bad taste in the mouth of cricket fans, especially that of the Indian team and they reacted by criticizing the use of poor technology, with some even hinting at tampering with DRS.
