Rachael Haynes is appointed head coach of Gujarat Giants in the WPL

Rachael Haynes has been named the team's head coach by the WPL franchise Gujarat Giants, who made the announcement on Friday.

Rachael Haynes has been named the team’s head coach by the Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchise Gujarat Giants, who made the announcement on Friday in advance of the WPL’s inaugural season, which will take place in March-April 2024.

Nooshin Al Khadeer, Tushar Arothe, and Gavan Twining have been named as the Gujarat Giants’ bowling, batting, and fielding coaches, respectively.

The team’s mentor and advisor were previously announced to be legendary Indian cricketer and former captain Mithali Raj. In addition to garnering her numerous awards and accolades over the years, Mithali’s pioneering efforts and contributions to Indian cricket have also played a significant part in elevating women’s cricket to the forefront of both domestic and international platforms.

“The likes of Rachael Haynes, Nooshin Al Khadeer, Tushar Arothe, and Gavan Twining will certainly take the performance of the team notches up,” Mithali said in a statement released by the franchise.

“Not only have they carved a niche for themselves in their roles, but their stories of resilience will [also] be an inspiration for the team,” she added.

Who is Rachael Haynes?

The Australian women’s cricket team relied heavily on Rachael. In an international career that began at Lord’s in 2009, the left-handed all-rounder played 167 matches for Australia, including six Tests, 77 ODIs, and 84 T20Is.

Meg Lanning’s replacement, Haynes, led Australia on 14 occasions while Lanning was absent due to an injury to her shoulder, most notably during the 2017–18 Ashes. The 36-year-old retired with victories for Australia in the 2013 and 2022 ICC Women’s World Cups and the 2018 and 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cups. She also competed in the Women’s Big Bash League for the Sydney Thunder, where she made a name for herself by dominating the charts for runs scored.

“The Women’s Premier League is such an exciting addition to the cricket landscape. The opportunity to be involved in the inaugural season with the Adani Sportline-owned Gujarat Giants and work with the brilliant Mithali Raj is something I’m really looking forward to. We have formed a wonderful coaching team, with Nooshin Al Khadeer, Tushar Arothe and Gavan Twining, who will be bringing on board their rich experience which will help the team to play an exciting brand of cricket which our fans will enjoy watching,” said Haynes.
