Check out Australia’s new tactic to finish overs within time to avoid penalty

Australia to have 'extra-fielders' in the ground to avoid over-rate penalty.

Many teams including India have been penalized for slow over-rates. Which has cost them some match-changing disadvantages. Given this, the T20 World Cup defending champions have now come out with a game plan to avoid such situations. Australia’s new tactic will help them save the match from slipping away. Australia tested this strategy during their recent T20I series against England.

“The over rate regulations are captured in clause 13.8 of the playing conditions, which stipulate that a fielding side must be in a position to bowl the first ball of the final over of the innings by the scheduled or rescheduled time for the end of the innings. If they are not in such a position, one fewer fielder will be permitted outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings,” states ICC’s rulebook.

See what Ashton Agar said about Australia’s new tactic

In the video shared by Cricket Australia, spinner Ashton Agar can be seen explain Australia’s new tactic. See below:

“In the powerplay, obviously, the ball flies around and you lose time when players have to go and fetch the ball, which is a part of cricket. So, the time thing is really difficult to manage. So, I guess stationing the guys who are on the bench around the ground, does it save you ten seconds here and there? Potentially. And that all adds up at the end of the day” .

“It’s not really giving you an advantage; it just makes sense. I think it’s common sense in the powerplay to do that because you don’t have guys out there fielding on the fence,” Agar added.
