Big Bash League 12: Hobart Hurricanes over power Melbourne Renegades in a low-score chase

Hobart: The grassy fields of Bellerive Oval saw an exciting defense from the home team Hobart Hurricanes. The Tasmanian team worked a Christmas miracle to defeat the Gades by 8 runs. The ‘Canes now have defended the second-lowest score in BBL History.

Hurricanes won the toss and elected to bat first. James Neesham opened the batting with D’Arcy Short. However, the constant loss of one end made things challenging for the Tasmanians. Captain Nathan Ellis and James Neesham scored 28 off 19 and 21 off 18 respectively. Apart from them, nobody played very much of a good performance. West Indian spin maestro Akeal Hossein and D Moody took three wickets each. Andre Russell took two while Mujeeb and Tom shared the rest.

Chasing the 122, the Renegades lost crucial wickets of Nic Maddinson in the very second ball of the match. They were 41/4 by the time Finch fell down dismissing hopes of a victory. The Gades held on to Dre Russ who followed Finch quite shortly.

Will Sutherland managed to gain some quality runs by keeping a tight rope. The all-rounder scored 40 runs off 29 balls including four boundaries. He held a strong forte till the end. The Gades had a fighting chance with Will on the crease. He looked poised to take it across 122 but failed. Joel Paris stole the show by taking him out and ending the Gades’ innings.

Riley Meredith was adjudged as the Man of the Match for his brilliant bowling efforts. He picked up three wickets off 12 runs. He plucked the crucial scalps of Sam Harper, Tom Rogers, and Andre Russell. Shadab Khan also picked up three. Meanwhile, spin wizard Patrick Dooley and pacer Paris shared two each.

With the win, Hobart jumped up to the fifth position. They have squandered 4 points from four matches. Meanwhile, despite the Renegades suffering their first loss, stays in the second position on the table with six points.
