Australia cricket team donates series prize money to children in Sri Lanka

The Australian team will be donating 45,000 Australian dollars in all to UNICEF's Sri Lanka appeal.

Australia cricket team donates the prize money from their recent tour to Sri Lanka in a heartwarming gesture. The island nation is undergoing a grave economic crisis since earlier this year. There have been frequent power cuts, a shortage of essential commodities, and inflation in fuel prices. This has been a matter of concern globally and the people in Sri Lanka have been struggling. During the 2nd Test against Australia, there was a peaceful protest held at the Galle Stadium in Sri Lanka. Now, Cricket Australia has announced that the team will be donating 45,000 Australian dollars to Sri Lanka. This donation will help the UNICEF’s program to help 1.7 billion children to access better nutrition, education, safe drinking water, healthcare, and mental health.

This is not the first time that Cricket Australia has come forward to help a cause. In 2021, the team came forward to donate 50,000 Australian dollars to India to help the country during the second wave of the Covid-19 crisis.

Australian Test skipper Pat Cummins

“It was very clear to us how much day-to-day life for Sri Lankans is being impacted. When the team saw what was happening it was an easy decision to donate our prize money to UNICEF, who have been in Sri Lanka for more than 50 years supporting the needs of children and families.”

Pat Cummins will be leading the donation. He is also the brand ambassador of UNICEF Australia. White ball captain Aaron Finch will also be leading the donation.

Australia has a strong bond with Sri Lanka that goes beyond the match days: Tony Stuart, CEO, UNICEF Australia

“Last year Australian cricketers got behind India in its time of crisis during the peak of the Covid-19 Delta wave and we thank them for again giving generously to help Sri Lankans impacted by the current crisis. Australia has a strong bond with Sri Lanka that goes beyond the match days and this donation is gratefully received to support the long-term well-being of Sri Lanka’s families.
