Format in Asia Cup
Established in the year 1983, Asia Cup was scheduled to be held every two years. The Asia Cup is the only continental championship in cricket and the winning team becomes the champion of Asia. It is meant to alternate every 2-years between ODI and T20I formats.
In the year 1993, the ACC announced that the tournament would be held biennially from 2009 onwards. But the International Cricket Council (ICC) had ruled that all games played in the Asia Cup have official One Day International status.
After downsizing the Asian Cricket Council in 2015, it was announced by the ICC that Asia Cup events from 2016 would be played on a rotation basis between ODI and T20I format, based on the format of upcoming world events. Such as, if the World T20I Cup is set to be held in the year 2013 then the Asia Cup edition in the year 2012 will have a T20I format.

Hence, as a result, the 2016 event was the first event played in the T20I format. And functioned as a preparatory tournament ahead of the 2016 ICC World Twenty20.
Originally scheduled to be held in September 2020, the Asia Cup tournament was postponed to July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then rescheduled multiple times due to multiple reasons and finally, it is set to take place later this month in UAE. And this is why the Asia Cup 2022 edition is to be held in the T20I cricket format.
The Defending Champions
The seven-time title winner India will set its foot in the tournament with the position of NO. 1 ICC T20 ranked team with a rating of 270. Playing its inaugural match against arch-rivals Pakistan, India would like to remain the Asian Champions.
