India’s silver medalist from Tokyo Olympics 2020, Mirabai Chanu has recorded her first gold medal for India at the Commonwealth Games. In the 49 kg category, she lifted 88 kilograms in her second snatch attempt to gain great momentum for herself and India. She went for 84 kilograms in her first attempt, which she successfully saw through. However, in her third attempt, she failed to lift 90 kilograms.

Mirabai Chanu Wins Gold In The 49 kg Weightlifting Final
Mirabai Chanu held a huge lead of 12 kgs from the second-placed weightlifter after the snatch round itself. In total, she lifted 201 kgs (88+113). Chanu has been great at the Commonwealth Games in her career so far. She won a silver medal at the 2014 Glasgow games and a gold at the 2018 Gold Coast games in the same category.
Last year she won a silver medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics by successfully lifting 202 kilograms. Mirabai Chanu now holds immense hopes from Indian fans ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Earlier in the day, India won two medals in Birmingham. Incidentally, both of them came from weightlifting as well. While Sanket Sargrar secured a silver in the 55kg men’s category, Gururaja Poojary won a bronze in the 61 kg category.
