Having almost wrapped the much-awaited transfer of Jude Bellingham to the Bernabeu, Florentino Perez shows no signs of stopping in his pursuit of fresh faces at Madrid. Sport Bild report that should Carlo Ancelloti decide to take up the position as Brazil’s head coach, Perez would be quite keen on bringing in Xabi Alonso as his replacement.
The former Real Madrid star has impressed in German football this season, taking Leverkusen up from a lowly 17th all the way to 6th in the table over 21 matchdays. With a talented group of players around him, Xabi has managed to lead his Werkself to an impressive Europa League semi-finals spot at the same time. Xabi has proved himself to be excellent at man management, developing players like Jeremie Frimpong and Moussa Diaby into even bigger stars while talents like Florian Wirtz continue to shine.

Deploying a 3-4-2-1 system and letting Frimpong run free and be more involved in the attacking third have been the most influential parts of Xabi’s philosophy. He’s someone who likes flexibility in his midfield with players like Edmond Tapsoba and Florian Wirtz to experiment with. Xabi would find himself amongst a wealth of talent to produe the same excellence with if he does join Madrid, with players like Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham to his disposal.
As it stands, Xabi is understood not to have a release clause in his current contract with Leverkusen which runs all the way till the end of next season. Even Ancelotti leaving for Brazil seems to be very much up in the air. If Xabi does move to Madrid, Leverkusen will be due a huge transfer fee but Sport Bild report, that Madrid are more than willing to invest the cash.
