As we approach the end of the Bundesliga season, with only 8 games left and all to play for, each game continues to be of utmost importance to all the teams. At the top of the table, behemoths Bayern Munich lead against Borussia Dortmund by a mere 2 points while Union Berlin who has had a season unlike any expectations sits in 3rd. Dortmund will be looking to capitalize on their momentum and march their way toward their first league title in over a decade.
The mid-table too continues to be a close affair, as Freiburg, Frankfurt, Mainz, and Leverkusen continue to be in contention for European spots. This season has been one of the close encounters, and the relegation battle in the Bundesliga continues to live up to those standards. Teams like Stuttgart and Bochum will be looking to give it their all to remain in the top flight of German football.
As we inch closer and closer to Matchday 28, let’s take a look at the best games and the ones to look out for this game week.
Bayern Munich vs TSG Hoffenheim
This might be the toughest Bayern Munich has had to fight for the Bundesliga title in a long time. With the trailing most of the season and barely holding on to a 2-point lead as of now. The Bavarians know every game is nothing short of a final for them. Coming off of a heavy and humiliating 3-0 loss against Manchester City in the Champions League and barely making it past Freiburg with a 1-0 win in the league last weekend, Bayern has a lot to sort under newly appointed manager Thomas Tuchel, who still hasn’t quite found a system to work with at Bayern yet. With Choupo-Moting possibly being back, Bayern would still aim for the best and come out guns blazing in this fixture.
Hoffenheim on the other hand, has had quite the dramatic downfall, falling from a respectable 9th in the league last season too as low as 14th this season, the position they currently occupy. Although they had their fair share of luck, Hoffenheim would still be high on confidence following a 2-0 win against Schalke. The midfield of Christoph Baumgartner, Andrej Kramaric, and Dennis Geiger are the ones who could make a difference for the club and put on a respectable challenge against the league leaders.

Borussia Dortmund vs VfB Stuttgart
Dortmund under Edin Terzic has been a team that thrives in the defense and midfield. Mats Hummels, Raphael Guerreiro, Julian Brandt, Emre Can and of course, Jude Bellingham have what could be an over-achieving season. The impetus that talents like Donyell Malen and teenager Youssoufa Moukoko provide cannot be forgotten.
With the league being the only competition that Dortmund are still alive in, having been knocked out of both the Champions League and the DFB-Pokal, the club does not have to worry about fixture congestion and will be looking to prove their mettle in each of the remaining games.
Stuttgart though has much bigger worries as the team currently sits in the relegation zone. A 3-2 win against Bochum in a fantastic match thanks to a Joshua Vagnoman goal will surely boost morale. Stuttgart will have to rely on its defense, especially Borna Sosa and Konstantinos Mavropanos, both of whom have had quite excellent individual seasons, to low-block their way against a thriving Dortmund attack.
Leverkusen vs Wolfsburg
Xabi Alonso’s men have surely done the unthinkable this season. What seemed like an unsalvageable situation, with Leverkusen sitting at a lowly 17th when Xabi was appointed manager, has soon turned into one of the best comeback stories in Europe. Leverkusen are currently 6th and very well on their way to competing in Europe again next season. Jeremie Frimpong, Moussa Diaby, Exequiel Palacios, and the wunderkind Florian Wirtz, this Leverkusen team consists of youth talents who just ooze footballing genius. A win against Wolfsburg will continue their good fortunes en route to an even higher finish in the league.
Wolfsburg, who finished 12th last year, dropping out of Europe and Bundesliga title contention, find themselves in a similar spot as we reach the end of this season. Currently sitting at 9th and with fixtures like Freiburg, Mainz, and Dortmund remaining, Wolfsburg will have to be at the top of their game for the season to end fruitfully. A draw to Augsburg and a disappointing loss to Gladbach haven’t helped their cause and Niko Kovac’s team will certainly hope for a better outing this time around. Look out for their captain, Maximilian Arnold and top goalscorer Yannick Gerhardt to make the difference.
