For the first time in the Open Era, China has an ATP Tour champion, and his name is Wu Yibing. After his semifinal shock victory against world No. 8 Taylor Fritz, Wu had already become the first Chinese player to compete in an ATP final. He also earned a Top 10 victory. At the Dallas Open on Sunday, the 23-year-old created history once more. Wu defeated John Isner in a thrilling match 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (12) to win his first ATP title.
“I made history here for my country and for my home,” Wu said during the trophy ceremony. “I’m very proud of myself, and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”
Wu, who entered the ATP Top 100 for the first time. This week, he will climb from No. 97 in the world to No. 58 on Monday a new career high. Wu was able to compete head-to-head with 6′ 10″ Isner. One of the biggest servers in the game, over the course of a three-hour encounter without allowing a single break of serve. Over the course of three sets, the American served 44 aces at his opponent. “I swear I thought I won the match a few times,” said Dallas resident Isner. “I know he hit one ball, and it had to be on the back sixteenth of the line… Sports can be brutal. He is an unbelievable ball striker and a very good talent.”
Wu Yibing Has Been Out Of Action For Three Years
Wu defeated No. 3 Denis Shapovalov and No. 6 Adrian Mannarino in straight sets earlier this week, and then she defeated No. 1 seed Fritz 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals.
The former No. 1 in the world for junior tennis, has accomplished remarkable feats for Chinese men’s tennis from the start of his career. When he won the US Open boy’s title in 2017, he became the first Chinese guy to win a Grand Slam. But his move to the professional tour had been hampered by a series of injuries. This kept him out of action for three years (2019-2021).
Wu dropped 1000 positions in the rankings upon his return in 2022. This allowed him to play in his long-awaited Grand Slam debut at the US Open. He achieved another Open Era first for Chinese men’s tennis in the third round, and in 2024, his steady ascent has continued.
