The likelihood that Novak Djokovic would miss the ATP 1000 competitions in Indian Wells and Miami was almost certain, but the world No. 1 now has new optimism that he might be permitted to visit the United States.
Djokovic is one of the most well-known people in the world who has not received the Covid-19 vaccine, and the United States is demanding that all visitors present proof that they have received the shot.
He was permitted entry to Melbourne for the Australian Open last month after being deported from Australia last year due to his Covid status and claims made by government officials that his presence in the country posed a threat to the wellbeing of the country.
Djokovic’s victory in that competition solidified his position as the best player in the world, but due to America’s stringent entry requirements, he appears destined to miss both of the opening Masters series events of 2024.
Can Novak Djokovic play in the USA?
According to American President Joe Biden, the current Covid-19 emergency declarations have been prolonged and won’t be lifted until May 11.
Politicians in America, however, are contesting that stance. Republican Thomas Massie has introduced a bill to repeal the vaccination requirement.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Travel Associations stated that it has “long supported the removal of this requirement and see no reason to wait until the May expiration of the public health emergency – particularly as potential visitors are planning spring and summer travel.”
They also state that “the United States is the only country that still has this requirement for international visitors when there is no longer any public health justification”, as pressure mounts on President Biden to review the stance of his administration. Uncertainty looms over Djokovic’s participation
Although Biden has suggested that the Covid-19 pandemic is over, restrictions were still in place at the end of 2017 due to an increase in cases in China.
Djokovic may still have hope that changes to US entry rules will be made in time for him to take his place in the draw for the first ATP 1000 events of the 2024 season because that outbreak hasn’t resulted in a sharp increase in global cases.
There is a good chance that Djokovic will lose the world No. 1 ranking he regained with his tenth Australian Open victory last month if he is prohibited from competing.
