After thrashing world no. 1 Daniil Medvedev at the Montreal Masters in the round of 32 on Wednesday, Nick Kyrgios believes his current level of tennis would place him in the top ‘one or two’ of men’s tennis rankings.
The mysterious Australian defeated the in-form Russian 6-7(1) 6-4 6-2 while maintaining his service to set up a round of 16 matchup with fellow countryman Alex de Minaur.
Any time you defeat the world’s top player, it’s an accomplishment, but it’s even more impressive when Medvedev uses hard court. Which is where he won the Los Cabos Open last week. Despite having a stellar 2022 season thus far. Kyrgios is now rated 37th in the world but would be ranked 10 if Wimbledon results counted toward rankings.
Arash Madani, a Canadian journalist, questioned Kyrgios about what ranking he thought would accurately describe his current level of tennis following his win over Medvedev.
Kyrgios answered, “One or two.”
Andy Roddick on Kyrgios current form
The 27-year-old won the Citi Open singles and doubles last week, and he has previously advanced to the semifinals at Houston, Halle, and Stuttgart. In 2022, only the legendary Novak Djokovic prevented him from winning Wimbledon.
After winning the two titles in Washington last week, he is now entering the US Open. Andy Roddick, a former world number one, feeling he is among the favourites to win the major at Flushing Meadows.
“To go through singles and doubles and not to tap out mentally or physically is a big, big sign,” Roddick commented.
“I think it puts him into the top two, maybe three, favorites for the U.S. Open.”
After watching Kyrgios play recently, tennis icon Renae Stubbs of Australia believes he is almost the top player in the world.
“I mean when he plays tennis and keeps his s**t together. He is seriously close to the best tennis player in the world,” Stubbs tweeted after the Medvedev victory.
“His serve is untouchable at the moment. Fitness level is HIGH and his tennis acumen is unreal. That effort after losing the 1st set was impressive.”
When will Nick Kyrgios’ next match be?
On August 12 at 5am, Kyrgios will compete in the Canadian Open’s round of 16 against fellow Australian Alex de Minaur (AEST).
The two had never faced off against one another at the senior level. But in 2020 they teamed up to triumph in a doubles match at the ATP Cup.
De Minaur, like Kyrgios, has been playing well recently and won the Atlanta Open earlier this month. Kyrgios was as low as 137 in February 2022 and is presently ranked 27 in the ATP men’s singles rankings.
In 2016, the 27-year-old attained a career-high position of No. 13.
Kyrgios is now ranked 22 in doubles, which is a career high.
