Novak Djokovic criticizes Italian Open courts, wants Roland Garros specialists to prepare them

After the win, Djokovic pointed out that not playing much on the court means it will break and have many holes, uneven surfaces, bad bounce, and with a lot of clay which makes it hard to play.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, after beating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the third round of the ongoing 2024 Italian Open, criticized the tournament’s clay courts because not much tennis was played on them before the start of the event. The Serb improved his win-loss record this year to 19-3 after that win over Dimitrov. He hit 21 winners and 10 unforced errors while the Bulgarian smashed winners and 24 unforced errors.

“Rome never had a great reputation for the quality of the court, to be honest with you,” Djokovic said. “What is interesting would be to understand how much tennis they’re playing on the court before the tournament starts. I think the other year I asked, and they were not playing much at all,” he added.

The 35-year-old then suggested bringing the Roland Garros courts specialists in to prepare the courts in Rome.

“If you don’t use the court, and you have a clay court, the court breaks, you have many holes, you have an uneven surface, really bad bounces, a lot of clay,” he said. “I remember maybe about 10 years ago, someone told me they brought Roland Garros people in, and that year the court was best. I don’t know why they don’t call them again because obviously, they’re the best clay court specialists in the world,” the Serb added.
