Novak Djokovic will turn 36 on May 22. His aging plus his vaccination stance have worried former American tennis player Spencer Segura.
In 2021, if Daniil Medvedev did not defeat the Serb in the US Open final, the latter would have clinched a calendar-year Grand Slam. Then in 2022, his stance on not getting vaccinated led him to miss the Australian Open as well as the US Open in 2022, plus several other major events.
“Djoker got screwed out of the game. They made it impossible for him, for some reason. They tried to throw him out of the game. There’s a lot of politics in that. They tried to ruin him. Thank god he’s made enough money,” Segura said in a recent appearance on the Advantage Connors podcast. After the 2021 US Open, the 35-year-old clinched two Grand Slams in his three appearances. Apart from the two Major titles, he lifted seven other titles as well. But as he is growing older, he won’t be recovering like the way the youngsters do, believes Segura.
“When you’re over 35 years old, you can’t recuperate. You play three out of five, and you play five tough sets, and you’ve got to play a day later, you’re not recuperating like the 22-year-old. So, you might win one or two of those, but you’re not gonna win three or two,” he added. He then added that though Djokovic is the “greatest” player, it will be harder for him to beat the young generation player. Novak Djokovic loses to youngster Holger Rune in Italian Open quarterfinal
Novak Djokovic succumbed to local boy Holger Rune in the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2024 Italian Open. The defending champion lost 2-6, 6-4, 2-6 and now, his next appearance will be at the 2024 French Open, starting May 28.
Now for the first time since 2004, the Italian Open final won’t feature either Djokovic or Rafael Nadal. Nadal is recuperating from a hip injury he sustained at the 2024 Australian Open. The Spaniard has won this title ten times, while the Serb tasted the success on six occasions, with both reaching the summit clash 12 times each and locked horns with each other in six finals.
