10th seed Jannik Sinner will face off against qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round of the Cincinnati Open.
With a 36-10 win-loss record so far, Sinner has had a fantastic season. The Italian’s season began when he competed in the Australian Open quarterfinals, where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. The child later suffered from injuries that made him miss games. Nevertheless, he advanced to numerous other quarterfinals, including Wimbledon, the Italian Open, the Monte-Carlo Masters, the Dubai Open, and many others. At Wimbledon, he put up a valiant fight against eventual champion Novak Djokovic, forcing him to go the full five sets, winning 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Thanasi Kokkinakis has made a comeback of sorts. The 26-year-old has had numerous injuries throughout his short career, but this year he returned to the major stages. At the Australian Open, Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios maintained their lead and won the men’s doubles match. Since then, he and Kyrgios have won another doubles match at the Atlanta Open. The Australian has primarily concentrated on doubles. He did, however, go to the Geneva Open quarterfinals, where he fell to eventual champion Casper Ruud 6-4, 7-6. (3).
