Third seed Alex de Minaur will lock horns with fellow Australian James Duckworth in the second round of the Atlanta Open on Thursday.
De Minaur had a lot of success on the hardcourts at the beginning of the season and hopes to have the same success there again. Two of the 23-year-ATP old’s Cup group matches were victories. Then he made his first-ever appearance in the fourth round of the Australian Open. De Minaur is a former Atlanta Open champion, winning the title in 2019. He’ll be looking to lift the winner’s trophy once again this year.
In the opening round, James Duckworth faced up against qualifier Dominik Koepfer. In the first game of the first set, the Australian had to hold three break points. But once he was able to maintain his serve, he didn’t look back as he quickly built a 5-0 advantage. The 30-year-old confidently served out the set after his rival’s hold of service. The second set saw more equal competition. Midway through the set, the pair traded breaks but otherwise held serve. The German won the tie-break, though, and the match went to a final round. Ultimately, he prevailed 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3. This was his year’s first triumph on a hardcourt.
