World No. 20 Alex de Minaur will take on qualifier Henri Laaksonen in the first round of the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday.
De Minaur won the Atlanta Open to start the North American hardcourt swing. On his way to winning the championship, he defeated Jenson Brooksby, Adrian Mannarino, Ilya Ivashka, James Duckworth, and more. The Australian, who lost to eventual finalist Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round of the Citi Open, was unable to duplicate his previous success. Then, in the first round of the Canadian Open, De Minaur defeated Denis Shapovalov, and in the next round, he triumphed against Grigor Dimitrov. In the third round, he was defeated in straight sets by fellow countryman Nick Kyrgios.
Meanwhile, Laaksonen’s most recent performances haven’t been all that outstanding.
In the opening round of the Los Cabos Open, he was defeated by Max Purcell. The Swiss then participated in a Challenger competition in Chicago as the event’s top seed. He did, however, drop in the first round once more. Due to his low rating, Laaksonen was forced to compete in the qualifications in Cincinnati. In the opening round, he defeated Taro Daniel in straight sets. The 30-year-old then mounted a comeback to upset Thiago Monteiro in three sets and advance to the main draw after falling behind a set.
