For the second time in franchise history, Chicago Blackhawks got The National Hockey League (NHL) Draft First Overall Pick rights. The first overall pick couldn’t have come in a better time as franchise bids adieu to Toews and Kane, two stalwarts in their recent successes.
22 Teams have got the first overall pick in NHL history, rest 12 haven’t been that lucky. As one might guess, the recent additions haven’t been awarded a First Overall Pick yet. Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken joined NHL in 2017-18 and 2021-22 season. Possibly because VGK has finished for Playoffs five times in a total of six season appearances. Among the teams, Dallas Stars have gone through many years without a first round pick. They joined as Minnesota North Stars in 1967, meaning 56 years of no first round picks. The selection rights hasn’t also been a privilege for the 1970 expansion team Vancouver Canucks.
The two initial Atlanta-based franchises which later relocated, Calgary Flames and the second iteration of Winnipeg jets also haven’t been awarded a first overall pick by the draft lottery. Flames have been playing for 51 years and Jets for 24 years. The 1979 NHL Expansion teams Arizona Coyotes (initially Winnipeg Jets) and Carolina Hurricanes (Hartford Whalers) also haven’t got a single 1st round pick. Although, The Coyotes have gotten a First Overall in 1981 when they were still Winnipeg Jets.
Anaheim Ducks, who has the second overall pick in NHL Draft 2024 has also never won a first round pick. Minnesota Wild, San Jose Sharks, and Nashville Predators has also never won the NHL Draft Lottery.
