On Wednesday night, Jayson Tatum led the Boston Celtics to a 115-93 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, snapping a three-game losing run. Tatum, who missed Monday’s game because of a sore knee, returned with a bang by scoring 30 points in just 31 minutes of action.
The Blazers lost their No. 10 spot, which they briefly held for just a few hours, falling to an astounding 14-20 on the road and 31-35 overall. Damian Lillard was the only Blazer to surpass the 20-point mark, finishing with 27 points in 30 minutes of play on 7-16 shooting from the field and 2-8 shooting from beyond the arc. With more than nine minutes left in regulation, the game was practically over, and none of Lillard’s teammates contributed enough to keep it close. Good win for Jayson Tatum and The Celtics
Jayson Tatum scored 30 points on 11-17 shooting for Boston, which led the game. Derrick White added 20 points and seven assists. The Celtics didn’t appear to be statistically superior in any category, but they did move the ball well and take advantage of gaps in the Blazer defense.
After one quarter, Boston was up 35–28, and 60–45 at the break. With 4.9 seconds left in the third quarter, Jayson Tatum hit a 3-pointer to give the Celtics a 94-72 advantage heading into the fourth.
Since opening night, the Celtics have been putting the Eastern Conference on notice, so this victory over a Blazers squad missing Simons did not cause any jitters for the other teams in the top spots. Yet, it did enable them to remain just 2.5 games behind the league-rising Milwaukee Bucks, who are the No. 1 seed and have won 20 of their previous 22 games. Joe Mazzulla, the head coach of the Celtics, kept his team moving, urged them to swing the ball, and exploited the Blazers’ defense. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the two dominant players on the team, rushed to use their creative dribble skills, cutting off their defenders, and using hesitation dribbles to find lanes in the basket.
In order to block driving lanes and encourage Blazer’s ball handlers to try cross-court passes, they regularly cheated on their weak side responsibilities when playing defense. Off the bench, Blake Griffin also provided great energy for them.
