Manchester City wins the Premier League for third successive season.

If it was mortifying for Arsenal, it was comforting for Forest. City wins the league for fifth time in six seasons as Forest survives.

Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest confirmed Manchester City’s status as Premier League champions on Saturday evening. But, if it was mortifying for Arsenal, it was comforting for Forest as Taiwo Awoniyi’s lone goal was enough for Nottingham to secure their place in the Premier League for next season.

Manchester City has a four point gap over Arsenal, who have just one game remaining this season, Arsenal’s second consecutive defeat means Pep Guardiola’s side has won the League with three games remaining.

The Gunners have led the League for most part of the season, but Manchester City’s 11 game winning run has shattered Arsenal’s hope of lifting the Premier League title since the famous Invincibles season, in 2003-04 under Arsene Wenger. Mikel Arteta’s side were 8 points above Manchester City in January, but Pep Guardiola took City to the driving with 4-1 victory over Arsenal at Etihad at the the end of April. Also read:

It is Manchester City’s third consecutive Premier League title and fifth in the past six seasons under Pep Guardiola. Guardiola’s City may become the second team in England to win the treble since Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United did it in 1999. Manchester City will face their city rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final on 3rd June at Wembley before they hunt for their first European silverware in Istanbul against Inter Milan.

Manchester City Captain Ikay Gundogan after the win: “To have helped the club win a third straight Premier League title is something very special, the Premier League is without doubt the most demanding and competitive league in the world so that tells you everything about what an achievement this is. This squad is so talented and so special and to have been captain this season has been an enormous privilege. To have won this trophy three times in a row and five times in six years is incredible. That quality and consistency helps sum up what Manchester City stand for and ensures the club will continue to strive for success going forward. It has been a season I will never forget. Our amazing fans have been with us every single step of the way. Without their amazing backing I don’t think there is any way we would have been able to achieve what we have done these past six seasons. Their passion and support have been so important and inspirational for us all.”
