Last summer, the 37-year-old forward Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to make it clear to Manchester United officials that he wanted to leave Old Trafford, but ended up staying due to a reported lack of interest from European suitors. Ronaldo, on the other hand, was the subject of one astronomical offer in the Middle East.
During an interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV, Ronaldo confirmed rumours that Saudi club Al-Hilal had offered him a two-year mammoth £305 million (Around ₹3000 cr) contract, making him the highest-paid footballer in the world. However, Ronaldo also admitted that he turned down the offer. Because he was happily playing for Manchester United at the time.
What exactly does Cristiano Ronaldo say?
Cristiano Ronaldo during the interview has spoken up about a lot of things from his recent experiences at Manchester United. He also talked about how he received offers to play for different clubs around the world.
He said: “It’s true, yes it’s true…but what the press keeping say, the garbage, is that nobody wants me, which is completely wrong,”. Ronaldo said: “And I was happy here to be honest, I was motivated to do a great season here.
“But they continue to repeat that nobody wants Cristiano. How they don’t want a player who scored 32 goals last year, with national team?”
Ronaldo also explained how hard it was for him to turn down such a high-value lucrative contract
He said: “It’s hard, it’s hard. But in the same way, I thought that I was very happy here; that I still capable to score goals… I still believe that I can score many, many goals and help the team because I still believe that I’m still good and capable to help national team – even Manchester United. But if you don’t feel around you that the energy’s on your side, it’s difficult.”
Ronaldo also expressed that the speculations are not bothering him. He said he is solely focusing on the World Cup and is mentally preparing himself to represent his nation.
