Bundesliga: Matchday 31 Preview

The Bundesliga season is coming to an end, which clubs will prevail once the dust settles?

With only 4 games remaining and all to play for, the Bundesliga title race continues to be an extremely close affair. Similarly in the mid-table, we have clubs like Leverkusen, Leipzig and Freiburg still fighting for European qualification. The relegation battle too has offered its fair share of twists and turns with only one point seperating Stuttgart, Bochum and Schalke. Overall, its tough to expect anything but fireworks in the next gameweek of the season. We take a look at the matches to watch out for this week.

Freiburg vs RB Leipzig

Freiburg come into this clash just days after a decisive thrashing by Leipzig in the DFP Pokal semi-finals. Christian Streich’s side will hope to go into this fixture with a clean slate, devoid of the scars from the big loss on Tuesday. Freiburg currently holds onto the 4th spot in the table after their win over Köln last weekend but Leipzig are just a mere two points behind. A win over Freiburg for the second time this week could see Marco Rose’s men leapfrog Freiburg and hold onto the extremely important Champions League spot. Freiburg would be hoping to spoil those very plans as they look to make amends.

Hertha Berlin vs VfB Stuttgart

This relegation battle clash has all the elements to be a class six-pointer. Last ranked Hertha aren’t going to get as good a chance as this for survival and with Pal Dardai still looking for his first win at this new club, the team will have even more of a challenge ahead of them. The team looked solid against Bayern last weekend in the first half before the behemoths struck and the defence unraveled at lightning speed. Stuttgart come off of a loss to Frankfurt in the DFB Pokal themselves but with a brilliant draw against Dortmund just a few games back, they seem to be the favorites heading into the tie. The relegation battle though, is sure to surprise us once again.

Werder Bremen vs Bayern Munich

With Bayern’s season being a plethora of inconsistent performances, the Bavarians will be hoping to finally kick into full form with their win last weekend. Every game is a title decider from here on and a win against Bremen will only mount the pressure on Dortmund, who play on Sunday. Werder hasn’t beaten Bayern since 2008, and the absence of their talisman Niclas Füllkrug is bound to make matters worse. The side come into the clash after a poor performance against Schalke and will hope to salvage a point at best.

Borussia Dortmund vs VfL Wolfsburg

It would only be one of the most unfortunate decisions in Dortmund history if they miss out on the league due to last weekend’s refereeing error. Nevertheless, the men in black and yellow will have to still come out guns blazing against an in-form Wolfsburg to maintain the pressure on Bayern. Wolfsburg are still aiming for a European spot so both the teams come into the tie with a must-win mentality. Expect a top-quality affair with goals aplenty.
